With world leading mummification experts Prof Joann Fletcher and Dr Stephen Buckley, and Bolton Museum’s Curator Ian Trumble.

Prof Joann Fletcher           Dr Stephen Buckley

In this first Bolton’s Egypt Study Day “All About Mummification” we focus on two key strengths of the collection: mummification and burial textiles, featuring the work of the University of York’s Mummy Research Group. Co-founded by Dr Stephen Buckley and Prof Joann Fletcher who have been researching aspects of the Bolton collection with their colleagues for over 35 years, their discoveries include the world’s oldest evidence for Egyptian mummification based on the analysis of textiles in Bolton’s collection and the likely royal lineage of the Unknown Man, a mummified body housed within the Thutmose III burial chamber gallery.

These unique blend of lectures and workshops provides the opportunity to get up close and learn at first hand. Prof Joann Fletcher introduces the History of Mummification in the first lecture of the day, after which she will lead an Object Handling and Examination workshop with real ancient Egyptian objects from Bolton’s collection. Bolton’s curator Ian Trumble will lead a workshop on Mummification Textiles and Wrappings using digital microscopy and real mummy wrappings. Dr Stephen Buckley will lead a third workshop on Mummification Recipes and Mixtures, producing mummification resins using ingredients identical to the ancient Egyptians. He will round off the day with a lecture on the Science of Mummification followed by an exclusive screening of the award-winning documentary Mummifying Alan: Egypt’s Last Secret.

The Study Day will conclude with after-hours wine, nibbles and chats with the experts in the Bolton’s Egypt galleries themselves.

CAUTIONARY NOTE: The study day deals extensively with human remains and aspects of death throughout. Attendee discretion is advised.
