Family Events

‘The Incredible Journey’ exhibition 

Join us for a family adventure as we explore the magical world of storytelling through paintings, drawings and prints from the museum collection. You can journey to different story worlds, play games, and make up stories as you go. The exhibition features artworks by Maggie Clyde, David Hockney, Gwyneth Johnstone, David Jones, Edward Lear and Henry Liverseege.

Baby Time, Tuesday 14th December, 10.30am

A fortnightly sensory session for pre-walking babies and their grown-ups. (There will be no session on the 28th December, after the 14th December, Baby Time will be back on the 11th January)

Toddler Tales, every Friday, 11:30am 

Enjoy listening and sharing stories with your little ones. These free storytelling sessions are for children under 5, with their mums, dads, and carers. (Please note there will be no sessions during the Christmas holidays, the last December session is Friday 24th)

Cinema at the Crescent- Frozen 2, Sat 11th December, 1pm

Join us to watch a family friendly film in our Central Library Lecture Theatre. Please note the new Cinema at the Crescent time of 1pm, and under 12-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult. Refreshments available to purchase.

Christmas Candy CaneChristmas Trail, Central Library & Museum. Wednesday 1st December – 2nd January. 9am-5pm Mon – Sat, 10am-4pm Sun

Come along to Central Library & Museum and see if you can find all the snow globes hiding around the building. Collect your answer sheets and pencils from the museum, good luck!

Super Saturday Christmas Crafts. Central Library, Saturday 11th, & Saturday 18th December. 1-3pm

Join us for our usual Super Saturday Craft sessions, only with a sprinkle of Christmas spirit! Free and no need to book! 

Outdoor Christmas Cracker joke trail, Smithills Hall grounds. 4th December- 2nd Jan

Explore the grounds of Smithills Hall this December with Christmas jokes along the way! The Cakery will be there for refreshments everyday too

A Christmas Carol, Smithills Hall, Friday 10 December, 7pm

£10 per ticket (no concessions) book on Eventbrite

Join us for this exclusive production of a Christmas Carol from “A Place For Us”.  This beautiful performance takes place within the atmospheric setting of the Great Hall with an audience of just 50. Mulled wine and mince pies included.

The Elves and the Shoemaker Christmas Show, Central Library Lecture Theatre, Wednesday 22nd Dec. 12pm & 2pm

The story of how the two Elves saved Christmas! Ethel and Gingerbread the Elves are determined to save Christmas this year! But when they come across a struggling shoe shop and down-on-their-luck Jemima, will they realise that when it comes to saving Christmas, it’s the little things that matter most of all!  This is a show about friendship, bravery, and how even the smallest action can change someone's life for the better, forever!

Full of music, madness, and mischief - the perfect show for getting in the Christmassy Spirit! Suitable for ages 5+
