Bolton Library and Museum Services

Bolton War Memorials Project

BoltBolton Cenotaphon Archives and Local Studies service are overseeing a project which will see the creation and development of a database of all of Bolton's war dead.

In addition to this, we are recording the details of as many of the civic, religious, public, private and commercial war memorials in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton. This will include areas which were not part of Bolton during the First World War, but now form parts of the Borough and also districts historically linked to Bolton, such as Turton, Edgworth, Ainsworth, Adlington and Little Hulton.

The boltonremembers.org website is now online.

What we're looking for

Although our primary focus is on recording memorials to those who served in the First World War, we are including memorials to other wars too, especially where the names are listed alongside the First World War casualties. Much of this information is not recorded anywhere else and will be invaluable to future researchers.

We are covering the complete range of memorials, from public civic cenotaphs, to plaques and panels in businesses and private houses. Some memorials have been moved from their original locations and this is a chance to rediscover these important records of local history.

How you can help

Below is a list of the war memorials for which we already have a record. If you know of any others not included in this list, you can record the details of the memorial on the form below and send it to us. The information will be compiled as part of our local database of war dead and will also be passed on to the Imperial War Museum's National Inventory of War Memorials.
